yeh i was just reading the rule book. Didnt realise you could run turbos in ss2000 now. I think they said 18psi limit. Do you have to run a restrictor, wrc styles? how would they police 18psi limit?

18 pounds would be plenty on one of those. admitadly I'm no turbo motor expert but 18 pounds sounds like plenty to make 3-400 horsies.

WRX STIs boost 18psi. thats poo your pants fast ^^ I thought my friend was lying when he said his did. Barry Whiteing ridiculous. Why not just build a better engine and boost a bit lower. What a way to use petrol.

I would have thought if you were going to run ss2000 or similar the best bang for buck would be a 2 litre turbo of some form. for example sr20det ir similar. Surely with the fact these things make 200 odd bhp out of the box and you can wind up the boost and do little bits to protect the engine? Thoughts? I would have thought 300 bhp from one of those would be the easiest power yet. Its certainly an option but as soon as you have a turbo on the engine it puts you into another class, possibly "unlimited"? It means you will be racing against all of the well setup modern 4wd cars, which I imagine is a difficult task. In addition to this there is a large weight penalty for running a turbo vehicle, they need to weigh about 1140kg or so, where as NA 2l is 900kg. This then strips away any benifit of having a small nimble car, because it will likely weigh similar to an evo once you put all the ballast in. But as far as bang for buck you are right in that you cannot go past a turbo for horsepower vs capacity. It would take many thousands of dollars and you'd end up with a grenade to get an NA 2litre to 300hp plus it would need 1000km rebuilds, where as a 2litre turbo engine making 300hp on 18psi would be comparatively reliable and under-stressed.

pajeros can boost around 18psi with a simple removing of a certain vac line haha. they have a valve that pops eventually but yea- around 18psi. dont last long tho

from what i have seen the best option for straight out of the box competiveness is to have an 1800 turbo. up to 1850cc turbos are only 980kg with driver, you could get pretty much the same power with 200kg less weight. Still have to run dots.

I had the best day at Hampton Downs today. Was just a track day, but sh*t it was awesome. What a fantastic track - so much fun to drive around. If my car could handle it I could stay out there for 50 laps I think.
My car was great too, managed a 1:22.1 three times, so I guess thats my limit at the moment. It was on some tricky gps transponder phone thingy that tracks sector times and everything, so the theory is that I can look at my sector times, lines I took, speeds at any point on the track and everything. I'm not sure on the accuracy but it samples your position 5 times a second (5 Hz) so can't be too bad.
My max speed there was 179km/h, which is cool because I don't have a speedo so have never known the speeds that I've been up to. I think thats the fastest I've been in the Chevette because I can't get much speed on Taupo track 2 and have not yet been on track 1.
What times do you other Chevette drivers manage around Hampton?

That is a good time mate, I have heard of those phone timers. You can get an apt for iPhones that look sweet, I wasn't sure if it was gonna work too well but I might download it. Only been there the once too, my best was a 1:17

Glad to hear your enjoying the fruits of your labours so much dude, I want a track car sooo bad now... especially seeing all the fun all you guys are having! Also be epic to see a bunch of our gem's/vette's in one race... will you fit in the same class as the Awesome 4some? (the 4 el minto hatchies) Need to make a decision on powerplant for green chevini, if all stays on track want it Phase 1 track ready by end of the year (have been saying that for a few years now though) That car is next priority after the black Chevini is back in my shed which will hopefully be in just over a week.

Sound awesome Brad, wanted to stop by on Sun but we left for home a bit late. Time sounds pretty reasonable, I'm keen to get hold of one of those GPS track timers too, Cam (at OS nats) had one for the iPhone and it worked pretty well.
Taupo Track 2 my fastest speed is maybe just under 160km/h so sounds like Hampton is pretty fast little track!

Taupo Track 2 my fastest speed is maybe just under 160km/h so sounds like Hampton is pretty fast little track! Its pretty crazy actually, you'd love it. My mate who has a track Vectra was lapping similar times to me. The Vectra was indicating 190km/h when we were maxed out and when you reach this speed you are entering turn one on the front straight, which is completely blind so you just have to brake off the marker boards. I was braking at 200m, which left a bit of room to spare but it still felt a bit scary at times. So much fun! I check my pads on Thursday night and they had about 4mm left on them, so I just flushed the system with new fluid. After about 6 sessions of 6 laps the brakes were shot. I didn't even realise it until the trip home where they began squeeking and by the time I was home there was nothing left at all, despite having topped up the fluid before leaving. I guess there must be a leak or something.

To be honest man, a Gem running a well setup 1600 and semi slicks would be very competitive out there on Hampton Downs or Taupo Track 2. They are such handling tracks I feel, the cars that handle well and the drivers who can pedal well really seem to put it to the higher horsepower cars. Our corner exit speeds were so good we were holding a much higher speed coming onto the straights, which gave us such a good run at the straights that we could easily keep up. Remember, my engines only an NA 2 litre thats standard and running similar to 40mm side drafts, essentially. Check out these videos. They are taken from an Opel Kadett GSi 1800 8v, which a Gemini would just about be able to have a crack at with a tuned 1600. You can see he gets past a lot but he still has a ball. My car features once in both vids, momentarily including a bit of a "moment" in the second video ;D These might be a bit boring but you can pull the slider along the bottom to get to the interesting parts.
