Looks like an awesome day. I love the pic with the three hatches coming around the corner!
And engine work, yes. I think it's a plague that gets everyone who wants to modify/race their car. It's NEVER enough power. Even if you got 250hp out of your XE, it wouldn't be enough. You'd just be swapping it out for the F20C a bit later down the track. My car is pretty fast, I'd say around 200hp at the engine, but I WANT 200kw at the rear wheels. This is possible but I'm gonna have to spend another fair wack on the engine to make that sort of power, and to me honest, I don't think I'm in control of what I've got half the time. I'd say, get used to the car and get to know it inside out, then you'll be able to deal with any more grunt you give it!
Craig, what rate are the stiffer rear springs you're looking at? And what are you running in the front + are you using Tony's special lower arms?

It sure does sound nice. I need another 1000-1500rpm to match that sound.

Hi guys, I am the owner of the silver Chevette HS replica at Hampton Downs on Easter Monday and have been enjoying all the posts. So thought I would join in. Yes, was an amazing day, the track is fantastic, the meeting was very well run and so enjoyable. Great photos and videos Craig, well done ! First time out for over a year ( Ruakaka last year), and first chance to try out new Lynchbuilt 4 link rear setup / Hilux diff/lsd / new AE101 brakes / lowered suspension, harder springs. Just amazing, cant believe it is the same car ! But after only couple of laps it felt really comfortable and confidence lifting. Tony is THE MAN! Now need many more laps. Still have to fit Tony's modded bottom suspension arms and balljoints and Mazda 4 pot/ BMW front disc setup. Bring it on ! Previously had Piazza torque tube rear axle, open diff, Piazza disc brakes, softer suspension and it had a bad habit of spinning with little warning ! Still has Piazza Turbo front discs and callipers The car is powered by a Toyota 3SGE ( std cams with Fraser modded cam wheels for more overlap), sl raised compression, ported head, 45mm Dellortos, 3SGTE oil pump. Supra W57 g/box. A Vauxhall C20XE Red Top lurks under my bench, begging to be installed........ Car has been work in progress for last 13 years. Tony had a spare spot so we decided to go for it and did the rear end conversion in 2 weeks, working every spare minute on it and finished it midnight Easter Sunday.... sounds familiar doesnt it ! Will shortly finish the signage with DTV / Castrol stripes, looks a bit plain at the moment. So each of the Chevettes is quite different in many regards. This one was started when racing Chevettes were very unusual, so had to make it up as we went along. Great to see the guys cars now, each is very cool in its own way and we will continue to have fun together as often as possible. Nice to shake up the establishment a bit ! I will put together some photos of the build right from the beginning and post them soon.

hi Pentti, welcome aboard! Love the look of the car - classic colour and stance!
Ruakaka, huh, not a member of the Northland Car Club, by any chance? One of my old stomping grounds - the older members'll remember me from when I was running standard and mildly modified Chevettes.
I've also got some C20XE*s - one was supposed to be going in the Chevette (on TBs, etc) over the Christmas break, but a few setbacks have put that on the backburner indefinitely!
*One in a Calibra, one for the Chevette repower and one spare. For something designed for GM by Cosworth in '84, it says a lot for the engine that TWO car companies are still using them more that 25 years later in professional racing series!

Yes, love the car, I drive it on the road a lot and it certainly attracts attention. Get approached all the time by old guys ( like me !) who remember them from the old days and young guys who just like old skool cars. I am a member of Hibiscus Coast CC, and have done Ruakaka 3 times - always a bunch of fun. Built the car originally to do Targa, but hasnt happened yet, for the usual reasons $$$ ! Always regarded the C20XE as the ultimate Chevette repower, with the advantage of having the right name on the cam cover ! However, Dan's car is just so phenomenal, you have to wonder what to do ! Cant believe that thing, and he drives it with heaps of brio! BTW, just recently heard the Pentti Airikkala died in Sept last year of cancer, aged 64 - gone but not forgotten for sure. Dont know how I missed that one. Found my C20XE at Pick-a-Part Avondale - in a debadged Calibra sitting forlornly down in the orphans corner - they had no idea what they had, so got it out of there real fast for a song!

I would suggest considering Jase's Toyota 3S-GE BEAMS engine for a conversion. Granted is wears the wrong badge but they are a great engine for tunability and produce 200hp standard. If you already have a 3S in there in my opinion an XE wouldn't be a step forward, as great as they are. nzgem.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=partsale&action=display&thread=845

Great to hear that you got your car up and running so fast. I remember seeing it with the floor pan cut out and it doing my head in... it must be scary to cut that much out of your car!!! Oh well, one day.
I agree with Brad, go for the BEAMS over the XE. Much more potential there with less cash and less chance of blowing things up.

i agree with me and say go with 12pp.
will be the: cheapest
most reliable
loudest.
are all those 12pp powered batmobiles still racing in ss2000?
