I'm on 86, just make sure the block is good and the tune is tight.

Good = no cracks or weak points. An engine builder will be able to get it x-rayed, crack tested, and sonic tested to make sure it's in good knick. Tight = I just mean a good tune. Not running too lean or you're asking for trouble. Get those air:fuel ratios right. 85mm bore seems to be a good option. That's what GemRacing uses for most of his tough engines, I'm not sure what pistons they are 'though. www.freewebs.com/gemracing/engines.htm

Gday - Duncan here - just joined today. Great forum. Im in Christchurch.
Ive just recently bought 2 chevette hatches, both with regos on hold. My previous chevette was about 15 years ago now, so been meaning to get back into them for a while.
Got a 77 hatch late last year, still fairly original. Plan to get this on the road soon. Been sitting over 10 years. Engine was well seized. Some minor rust. Want to keep this one fairly original but maybe do some minor work to the 1256 once replaced and put on some nice alloys, something a bit old school. Local wreckers are all laughing at me when i enquire about parts....
Got another 79 hatch last week, mainly as a donor car, mainly needed the engine out of it etc. Been sitting about 5 years. This one has been mucked around with, had a respray, got mags, all the trims etc were taken off it. Interior rough. But it runs well, and there only a couple of spots of minor surface rust (but who knows how much else bog is under the paint on the guards). This ones surprisingly straight and may become a long term project car (maybe a HS spec replica or similar). Looks a bit too badass for me. Handles like a pig though - dont remember Chevettes feeling this unstable! It may have been lowered at the front - yet to measure it. Otherwise i may just track down another 1256 for it and sell it on.
Will post up some photos sometime once i know how to do it. Cheers

Dolk, would that be the Palmy Army? Good to see you and Dunc are working on keeping the cars still as runners, not many left, it seems. You should be able to get plenty of advice and assistance with parts, too.
