is total vauxhall a good magazine? iv never seen it before. been thinking of exhaust ideas, main problem- standard exhaust exit is on the drivers side at the back which is on the wrong side for the c20xe, and i dont fancy having to cross over sides under the car making more bends and making the exhaust longer.. second problem- no room to run exhaust over diff on passengers side.. couple of ideas.. cutting the floor to give the exhaust more room.. or the idea a like most is to exit the exhaust behind the passenger door the red dot on the photo anyone know the requirements for exhaust exit position for cert? or any other ideas on where to run the exhaust

would like to know the answer to this question as well, I am interested in doing this on my Manta reading the hobby car manual it says it cannot discharge below the passenger compartment and in the case of an external exhaust system which extends the outer longitudinal extremety of the vehicle or the outer side wall of the tyres the exhaust system must A: have a radius of no less than 3mm on any section facing toward the front of the vehicle & B: have any sections of exposed exhaust contactable from the front of the vehicle or adjacent to points of occupant entry or exit adequately heat shielded

yup your info is on the dot, this is what iv found on the lvvta forum Exhaust side pipes: NZTA regulations state: "An exhaust system must be designed, constructed, positioned and maintained in a way that minimises the risk of heat or fumes emitted from the system harming the vehicle’s occupants." The LVV requirements provide more guidance: An exhaust system fitted to a low volume vehicle must be positioned so that it terminates in a position where the outer end of the exhaust pipe is not directly underneath the passenger compartment. This allows an exhaust to end under the sealed boot floor of a sedan, tailpipe angled downwards; it does not have to protrude out beyond the rear of the bumper. Cobra and Lotus 7 replicas are built with side pipes which are as long as possible so that they exit just in front of the rear wheels. This design can be used on other vehicle types, as long as the exhaust exits just in front of the rear wheel. This is so that fumes can't rise up and enter an open window. Externally vented wastegates must also follow this requirement, ideally exiting as far rearward as possible, not in the engine bay or out of a front guard. If the exhaust does exit from teh side, any sections of exposed exhaust adjacent to points of occupant entry and exit must be adequately heat-shielded, to prevent burn injuries. if you want to PM me your email address I will scan and send the article from this months total vauxhall on the XE HSR chevette, looks like the guy has the rear muffler up in the boot in the space between the fuel tank and the left hand wheel arch. would mean a bit of panel work and some kind of enclosure but the pipe must come up over the rear axle and into the boot, then it comes out a hole in the rear valance, looks nice too

all good for a rally car, you want a road/track car don't you? what did bulldog do with his XE zorst? from memory he had butt loads of room due to the 4link convo and half the floor being removed and boxed out- do that lol, get it transported to Tony Lynch think he said it costs about 2k if my brain has remembered correctly.

Go under the diff and out the back? There's room to do what you need to do, you just have to find it.

god they look nice, are they SBD headers? that exhaust looks sweet, guess it wont really matter if it has to cross over, gradual curve like that looks much better than my previous setup with the 2.3 which was two 90 degree non mandrel bends crossing straight over haha..

no they are from retro power in the UK, been waiting almost a year in line for mine. (bit like my Bilsteins they took 10 months to arrive)
I am not sure if the SBD ones are a perfect fit, a lot of the RWD XE manifolds sold in the UK are made for Escorts. I dont buy from SBD at all, but I know Gordo says they are ok to deal with.
check out retropower.co.uk
good guys to deal with once they know you, they get bombarded with e-mails.
another good site is wizbangfabrication.co.uk

Always a pain in the ass making it cross over from the left to right, I had to squeeze exhaust manifold inbetween floorpan and gearbox cross member..

if I were doing things again, I'd prefer to build the manifold in situ as there are some compromises that may need to be made - the SBD one I bought is the same as the one Derek bought and there's a big difference in the primary lengths - not a good thing - and the SBD type "C", which is their top end one, requires mod's to the sump wing (often the engine'd be dry sumped so not an issue) and chassis in Chevettes. I would assume the various UK 'Escort' maniflolds would also require some fettling.
Best thing to do, IMO, would be to channel the floor to run the exhaust - not a big issue if fabricating 4 link boxes, anyway.

Hi friendlyfire, Just found your thread on your car and am very impressed with what you have achieved. My Chevette also had a very long gestation, several engine / gearbox / diff / brake changes etc. I was able to route the exhaust out the L rear by cutting out a portion of the L boot floor and creating a box so could mount the rear muffler high and tail pipe exits out thru the rear panel under the bumper, as was done in the DTV rally HS's. See photo. Unfortunately dont have a photo of the structure of the box but it was very simple to do. When I got Tony Lynch to replace the Piazza diff with the 4 link plus Watts linkage rear suspension setup on the Hilux diff, the entire rear floor was replaced and the muffler box was removed, so the current setup is not quite as tidy as it was, I need a smaller rear muffler. Incidently, the bumperettes were made by cutting centre section of the rear bumper, and welding on the curved ends of the discarded front bumper - again as in the DTV cars. I have a c20xe tucked away under my bench which will replace the current 3SGE when it eventually goes bang - however, so far it has tolerated a lot of abuse without complaint..... So I have been intrigued with your red top installation, which looks great. Is it running yet ? I noticed that you have a set of silvertop quad throttle bodies - do you still intend to use them on the c20xe? I also have some tucked away but wonder if they are big enough for a 2 litre ? I have seen them on 16V 4AGE's and they make the most fantastic induction noises with just ram tubes on ! There are some photos of the build of my car at : nzgem.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=membcar&action=display&thread=1023 They may be of some use as you continue the development of your car, feel free to contact me. Tony at Lynchbuilt Engineering is the Chevette guru and he has had a lot to do with the evolution of my car and is very approachable for advice and help. Look forward to seeing your car some time. Cheers

cheers man, still a long way off starting her up, have given myself a deadline of mid december, 4months away!, as im heading upto palmy for polytech in january and want my car finished and on the road so i can take it up there.
exhaust looks nice, no problem with ground clearance haha, will see what i can do this time around, may do that when i do phase 2 with new diff.
love your car! love the iconic chevette hs style, always awesome to see. i see you have sealed your rear windows? how did you go about that? wanting to do that to mine also, nutsty glue hinges and poorly sealing rubbers which caused my boot to rot haha...
yup will be running the 4age silvertop throttle boddies, they are super cheap! got the whole silvertop inlet including TPS for $189 which have a butterfly of 43mm, and easily re spaced to suit inlet manifold which im doing, have seen them on many cars so must be good? seen them on a 3sge beams, so must be able to handle it.
yup already been talking to tony, only problem is hes all the way up in auckland and im in nelson, was going to cost a grand to get my car sent up there haha, so iv got a local guy who mainly does rotorys but was keen to take my project on, might go for a road trip next year when im in palmy and head up there and check out his setup

Hi, good to hear back. My rear windows are not sealed, still have poorly glued on hinges and catches, but seem to seal reasonably well, except if you blast water straight on them. Be interesting to see how well your throttle bodies work, sounds promising if they work OK on a 2L BEAMs. Talk to to Tony about the set up - he has devised a very good ignition setup using Subaru sensors and coil packs which I have on my car, with a LINK ignition only computer - works incredibly well. He used it on his Chevette HSR when it had the Lotus motor in it too. Now has the mighty 400bhp Lexus V8 with quad weber IDA's in it. I have been in it with him around Taupo circuit and it is a beast ! He lives 5 minutes drive away from me, so spend lots of time in his workshop seeing the amazing projects he takes on. We went down to Taupo couple of weekends ago to sprint meeting and had a blast. We have had 4 chevettes together out on Hampton Downs - Tony's Lotus powered HSR, Bulldogs c20xe powered HS, Dannyboys HondaS2000 powered Chevette ( also built by Tony - incredibly fast car) and my 3SGE powered HS ( DTV signage not yet done ). Together in the pits - my car before DTV signage done. We all managed to get on grid together for one race. Huge fun. Hard at play ! Also play at Pukekohe........ Tony's mighty Lexus V8, in case you havent seen it - beautiful installation. Be very cool if you could join us at a track sometime when finished. Cheers
