This is my gold nugget. I bought this last week and drove it back from wellington to auckland and it didn't miss a beat. She's certainly one of the tidiest chevettes i've seen in a long time and completely original. I plan on using the car for random motorsport events and it will be a slow build to hopefully a 2litre twin cam astra/vectra/jappa motor and driveline. I'm planning on full HSR body kit and 13x8 rims of some sort. Some sort of sports/race suspension and brakes etc. Initially i'll do simple easy power gain stuff on the 1256 and get some better rubber and do some events like that. Slow but fun nonetheless. I've got a baby on the way new years eve and my mrs is off for 10 months hence funds during which time will be mediocre for a while. I'm pretty handy with a spanner although I've never done a complete motor and driveline swap so I'd really appreciate everyone's help where possible and I'm more than willing to help others where i can. I've also got a DRZ400 Super moto which is my daily commuter and is a helluva lot of fun.

Nice man. Saw your pics on OS and thought it look schmick as. You'll be the first around here to do the HSR kit too, should be interesting.
You should try and get hold of the back issue of Classic Car which had a few chevettes in it with HSR kits. Also, there is one floating around with a 2.3 Esprit engine in it on twin 48s with a mean HSR kit, he does a lot of events so maybe try find out where he'll be. He's an awesome dude and will talk to you for ever.

Is there a difference between HS and HSR, kit wise?

Got a mate with one the same colour. If you're going to be building it up over time, I'd suggest starting with the things that'll continue to be useful as the spec' improves. First things I'd do would be to check the top mount on the front end is in the more negative position, possibly set the caster to the maximum position and fit some uprated dampers (shock absorbers). I used 32 PSI all round with either the stock 155-13 or 175/70-13 tyres. These simple mod's will make it quite a bit more responsive to drive, corner wise. If you're feeling rich, you could also replace the bushes - TJ Motorsport, in the UK, will sell you a FULL set (front and rear) for$8-900 but, unless it's shot, you shouldn't need it. You could cut a coil or 1 1/2 off the front but, TBH, it doesn't make that much difference - I'd leave the rear as you'd then need something to stop the spring falling out of their seats. I'd suggest getting a good quality - and well fitting - bucket type seat as you can have trouble staying in place when driving hard - it could also be fitted lower in the car as, if you're like me, you're going to need more clearance when wearing a crash helmet. Main thing is just to go out and have fun, learning the car as you go along. A quick rack - your other posts - is nice but not an essential.

Yeah you're right gordo, I was mainly interested in the cost of the rack.
I've got a seat to put in and a momo wheel I had and I totally agree with the seat as in my old HB viva I had I put a seat in after trying to hold myself in place with elbows on doors etc....funny for about a sec!
I'm mainly looking around for engine and driveline replacements at the moment. I'd like a 2 litre of some sort with five speed and strogner diff and discs. I want it to be something that I can get parts for easily too. It's simply a matter of finding them and then trying to fit it myself with help from yourselves and mates.

I don't know how easy it will be to find a common 2 litre that will go in easily with readily available parts. I got a 2L twincam isuzu engine (g200w) in one of my chevettes because they were relatively common and cool but I found they dried up rather quickly and parts are unobtainable pretty much. Thats a major incentive of going to the newer Opel motor, though obviously fitment isn't anywhere near as easy or cheap. The single cam 2L isuzu motors (g200z) are realtively easy to get hold of and parts are still around but its not really too exciting a conversion unless you go turbo. Straight forward though. You can use a piazza disk rear end though they are 50mm wider. These are hard to find and afew of us are looking already so get in line I can't imagine that parts would be easy to get and the calipers and lsd's are far from a good design so it may be better to go straight to something a little more modern. Rumour has it chevette diffs are good for 170hp though

That Chevette diff figure seems to keep going up! Last I heard it was 150, heard Gems were 150 too.

Really? I thought I'd always been saying 170hp because thats what I've been expecting mine to be making. I'm hoping it will handle 200hp because if it does then I won't need to upgrade it haha. The actual figure that they are rated for max according to chevettes.com is 100hp. Anything more and it will deffinately blow up...
