it is thin but i just put the patch in and stripped the rest of it with a wire wheel on my grinder and it took it back to bare metal so i put some pa-10 etch primer on too stop it rusting again will be ok for now. Had to add a patch on a low point under the fuel tank aswell as it had rusted through to the inner guard

try your local engine reconditioner. I find they have the cheapest engine parts. you can get them from repco and the like but they normally want ridiculous money for them. You may need to go oversize anyway

other than them being a complete c*nt to put in... have done it twice and all lined up and the covers in at least one of them werent from the car they went into. pain in the butt as they were covered in sealant gunk and ended up with it all over the place, not a job I look forward to doing again, Gemini heaters are equally ugly but way easier by comparison... have one of those to reinstall in the days ahead : )

I took 2mm (80 thou') off one - must have been very close on valve to piston clearance! There was also some other issues, such as triming the ridges under the rocker cover and taking some material off the rocker lock nuts. As I've said elsewhere, if I were doing it again I'd start with taking some off the block, with around -10-15 thou deck height, depending on the head gasket used - Repco is easily the best I've used as the GM one is cheap crap! Use a couple of dummy shafts/bolts with the heads cut off in the end holes to ensure the gasket and head are correctly aligned - there's a smaller hole in each at the ends.

engine is now stripped down found a few little surprises it had run a main bearing(nearest the front) and all the other bearings are verry scorred and worn took crank to engine reconditioners and he measured it up for me and said it will clean up at 20thou undersize as it has had a regrind to 10thou under in the past. the cost to get regrind done with crank and bearings all re fitted to spec is $312+gst +the cost of the bearings .

Finally its all back on the road runs perfect, only 1 problem is my starter motor does not ingage quite often it just spins without hooking into flywheel and turning motor over. Any1 have any ideas on what it could be its a right pain in the but. btw the starter has a solenoid

The bendix is an inertial engegement type - the starter spins up and the inertia of the bendix (the bit that engages the flywheel ring gear) runs it down to the shaft into the ring gear. The usual problem is it's run dry - best thing is to pull the starter out, lubricate it's bushes and the starter bendix shaft with some light engine oil, clean up the cummutator (the segmented copper bit towards the rear of the shaft) with some fine W&D and wipe down with some iso-propel to make sure it's clean and oil free. Then refit.
However, on the 'vette it's a pain to access, and you can get fairly good results by pulling off the rubber cover, if fitted, on the bellhousing that fits over the bendix and giving it a good spray with some WD40, CRC or if you can access it, some engine oil from an oil can with a long spout. You can work it a little along the shaft to help work it in.
