Missus wants a dog like super hardout. its her birthday in a couple months so im havn a look around now. Not realy sure if a dog is a good idea yet. undecided She wants a beagle but im not so keen on that idea. My grandparents had one. They're naughty as little Mrs Funt'maRunts. The thing actualy came home with a string of sausages once just like in a cartoon or something. Then it died cos it ate some poison berries im keen on one of those farm dog things. Huntaway( i think) type like this: anybody had experience with these? are they suitable for the city?(suburbia, have lawn etc not apartment lol) any advice or sugestions would be choice as i realy dont know anything about buying a dog

Probably female.. and perhaps you should try asking her what kind of dogs she likes....

she likes beagles and ladradors and huntaways or golden retrievers. Or anything similar including muts n nuts. Over all shes not that fussed, just wants a dog. She has said that she doesn't want any small yappity yap yap dogs except for beagles(but they aint always that small anyway).
so yeh i chose huntaway as the coolest dog out of those ones.
whats better about females over males?

disagree entirely about females zep, my boy Styx is way safer with my babie girls than the pregnant dog... he is so awesome with them, he is a year older than Chloe (6) and Ari-Elle is now 18months old never had an incident worse than whipping them with his tail (quite uncontrolable doggie urge) Vada on the other hand has nipped and been known to get quite grumpy and inpatient with both of my daughters, even to the point where we nearly got rid of her...

haha yeh you cant say b i t c h on this forum i have noticed that man dogs generly seem to be abit less moody(duno if thats the right word but you know what i mean) lol but i guess every dog will be different(edit: do have a girl cat so might be sweet to get a man dog) girlfriends aunt in NY has a pitbull crossed with a golden retriever. Pretty lol/sweet dog. Looks like a normal golden retriever except with squinty pitbull styles eyes im super keen not to Barry White up this dog selection. Will have to live with the thing for like 15 years give or take i need to go check out these huntaways they seem to be pretty sweet. Any other similar breeds anybody can recomend? (short hair, not too big, not too small)

(short hair, not too big, not too small) As much as I love my boy his short white hair gets everywhere! I'm sure the black biarches hair does too but white hair sticks out like... dogs balls. I'd say whatever breed you pick you would grow to love, they are awesome creatures but select one with the same needs as you... if you don't like going for walks get something that is lower energy... (or move to a farm like I did ;D) Personally I love the stauncher looking breeds... don't like most long haired dogs with exception of Newfoundland and a few others... Don't get a german shepherd, loads of inbred ones had to put mine down at 9yrs old with hip displacia... I do see what you mean tho Tom and it's good to hear you are committed (your comments about having for 15yrs or so...) they aren't like a car are... (being able to sell when you get bored of it..) Also be careful! We got 1st dog a few months after hooking up way back in 2002... 2nd dog a year later and a year after that along came Chloe!

If getting a free puppy try your best to see what that were bred from to make sure they aren't (too) mongrel, because all puppies look sweet, but some grow up to be sh it balls

ha doberman would be sweet. Magnum PI styles. But nah i had a relative with dobermans. They get too protective haha. I want something that wont try kill strangers/me my neighbour has a german shepherd, was talkn to him today...said that my cat teases the Barry White out of it and he's had to pull a couple of claws out of the dogs nose i couldnt belive it!!! the cat is only like a year old. At 3 months old she was bringing home the other neighbours pet pidgeons i been readn abit more about huntaways. Turns out they're super friendly and smart + easy to train. The internet says they have heaps and heaps of energy. Got ta run it everyday haha edit: and internet also says they get along well with cats... which is ok cos i got some new runing shoes keen to start training for london 2012. Im a couple years behind schedule so need to get cracking

you'll be sweet
I was going to say, I've never seen a normal dog win against a cat. All the dogs I know/have seen get smoked by cats.
That said, if a dog does win, there is no cat left, so making sure they get on would be good. Getting the dog as a puppy though and with your cat still being quite young I'd say they will get on fine, but the cat will rule the roost.
Bikes or skateboards if you live in town, are also good for running dogs/tie it to your car bumper
