You can't just fit another main cap to a block, they're align bored and honed and each one is slightly different - if you're VERY lucky, there'll be just a fraction of a thou' misalignment sideways - much more and you'll have a bearing failure. If there's a misalignment vertically, you'll have either insufficient crush, which will mean a spun bearing, or to little which will mean the cap isn't seated properly. If you do decide to take the risk, you MUST check it carefully with an inside micrometer to ensure it's got a round tunnel - unless you go to the expense of having the bottom end re-bored, which is a specialist job and quite expensive.
There are also two different versions of the 1256 block' oil breather, an earlier type that is the same as the 1059 and 1156 which, IIRC, is a simple breather to the atmosphere, and the later type which is internal. Been a long time since I've seen the early type, so may have the details condused, mind.
Where are you based? I've a complete Chevette 1256 engine that's been sitting outside for some years, you can have it for free, if you can collect it - there's probably some internal rusting, but may be a suitable block for you?

This engine is in the 2nd Chevron Kitcat built in 1985 The car is based completly on the Viva diff, front ass ,gearbox steering

If that's the car I'm thinking of, it was at the first Whangarei Street Sprint with a 1156 Viva engine. I had the blue Chevette hatch.
If you're doing a re-power, have you considered going the m/cycle engine route?
Oh, I'm in West Auckland, if you're coming down for anything, can just throw it in the back of the car or a light trailer.

Come to think on it, I've a short block that's been stored inside for about 15 years - had done maybe 20k kms on a rebore (+20, if I've the right engine in miind, new oil pump, timing chain, crack testing, etc, and I may still have a light flywheel that needs a ring gear (they seem to have been bloody hen's teeth!). If you want to consider staying 1256, we should be able to work something out.? These engines can really respond to head work, depending on which version of the head you have - early HC were quite a bit better flowing, but the later ones can be reworked very effectively. Check out my early posts for a summary of some mod's I've done to good affect on previous engines.
Give me a reminder, when you know you're coming down.
Oh, I assume you've joined the Northland Car Club, should be some folks who can help there and pass on my regards from Gordon. Got some health issues at the mo', but should be up that way again, before too long, for a visit.

Straight or offset drive for the distributor? I think I've a new one of each but will have to check - they don't come with pickups, though, so you'll need to clean the old one carefully.
