what fits the chevettes with regards to steering boss kits? I've been asking at a couple of parts places and keep getting told that something might fit, but none of them were really sure....

I have a Toyota one on mine. Spline was exactly the same, so there are definitely options out there.
My Chevette one even fits the spline perfectly on my Vectra, so they must be relatively universal.
I have tried Piazza, Gemini and Opel Manta though and they were all different, which surprised me a little bit.

When I enquired at Ripco a while back I'm sure they had Chevette listed...

They did 3 years ago when I bought one, but that may have changed. Thats the one that I'm now using on my Vectra.
I would count the splines and measure the ID and then go into Repco and measure a standard run of the mill Toyota Corolla one to see if its the same and go from there.
Thats if you have exhausted the Bedford and other Vauxhall supplies already..

Thing to watch out for is there are three slightly different splines used on Chevettes - some interchange one way but not the other. Make sure you've the right version or can return if it's loose.
