did nz chevette's have a change to the make of rack in early 80's. I think one was cam gears and the other was burman but not sure which was first. Must consult mr haynes... I have a quick rack kit and i need a rack to take apart but it has to be the newer one.

i just had a remeasure of the Viva rack- and by the measurements ~I took off our last chevette in england the viva one is about 150mm shorter~!!! I dont think i'll be able to fit one- even if the track were right the inner track rod ends are to far apart and the would wreak the front geometry (bump steer)

I'm sure you will either end up getting another chevette or someone on here will buy it for a nice wee profit to splurge on something for your motorhome! Not a total loss...

There were indeed two versions of the rack fitted to Chevettes, a long stem with the flexible coupling and a short stem without the coupling. The method of adjustment was also different, one used shims for the pinion and engagement preloads, and the other had a screw adjustment - can't remember which was which. When I got the quick rack for the Chevette, I bought a rack assembly - they didn't say it still needed arms and boots, the sods! CF Bedfords also used a rack and pinion setup, but I expect they'd be a different size again - if you could find one.
Have you tried contacting the supplier, or the Viva clubs?

I think its the early one with a nut for adjustment. later ones used shims under 2 plates separately for pinion and rack. My kit is for the later one. Its the one that the GP4 coupling fits.
If soemone has a chance could they please measure the width across between the pivot points on the inner track rod ends. Just in case I made a mistake.

Oh, that reminds me, IIRC, later version used a crimp on the arm's lock nut and the early/Viva used a lock nut - usually drilled with a lock pin.
