Did he actually say 1275? Chevette is a 1256 engine. I'd like to know a bit more about what he thinks he knows - like screw in rocker studs so they don't pull out at high rpm with heavy springs - as I'm very sceptical of people who claim to know "everything". I'm also quite suspect about claims of "secret" cam' grinds and the like. Maybe he is a 1256 guru but remember it's going to be your engine and your money.

is it really worth spending money on a stock chevette engine? be cheaper & easier just swapping it out for something more powerful. i dont think it would raise the overall price of the car either.

True, but it can be fun playing around with the original engine as well.

i toyed with this in my aqua one but considering im likely at some stage to be towing the race car with my sedan the 2300 was a better option.
I have all the books from Blydenstein to tune the 1256 including cam grind specs etc so no biggie finding out that and from memory best setup was fully lightened balanced bottom end, improve the oiling to bearings, twin throat downdraft weber 28/36 (from mem) ultra hot cam, flowed head etc. Keep in mind they only ended up with about 100bhp in the end so perhaps not the best bang for buck. I'm sure Gordo knows most of the tricks

I would imagine that the above setup would have sounded the bees knees tho

Craig, be interested to have a read of the B'stein book sometime, if possible. A few years back I knew a guy in the NCC that did a lot of development work for GM for racing the Chevettes, things like milling heads and welding in ports for four seperate inlet ports and dual sidedrafts, modified rocker system that used a shaft mounting for high rpm stability, etc - pretty full on engine modifations and a heck of a lot more than I would ever have dreamed of doing.

haha 1275 is my bad. im not looking for uber power, but a 5speed would be nice.. its a toss up between doing the 1256 and susing out how to fit a 4k box. or working on the 161 i have in the shed and and shoving that in. ither way i will need to source a gearbox and do some mods to the car..

There were indeed a few conversions using the RWD Starlet gearbox and, IIRC, a machined off Chevette bellhousing with an adaptor plate. There was a machinist in Whangarei who did at least one but don't have any realy useful details - if I remember his name I'll let you know.
