hey guys. have bought another chevette recently but unfortunately will not start up for me . have new cap/rotor/points plugs & leads look ok. set timing , points gap etc. as far as i can see everything is set the way it should be for ignition. shes a stock 77 sedan. starter seems a bit slow to turn sometimes & needs a little encouragement to turn(quick whack with my adjustable wrench ). carb seems to be getting fuel but is just coughing rather than firing. air filter looks alright too. when i first cranked her she fired up for a few seconds then died as if there was no fuel. so since then have checked fuel pump & seems fine. swapped coil from other 'vette & nothing. put a new cap/rotor & points in. so now im running out of ideas. any help would be greatly appreciated ;D

poor some fuel down into the carb
if it starts and then stops check fuel line for blockage.
if it dont start then i cant help as thats the extent of my tech knowledge ;D

hey thanks man. yeah i tried that but nada. fuels getting to the carb ok but i think its spitting it out. coz i get a psst sound when i crank it, then fuel dripping out the side of the carb like she's pissing herself or something?!? lol im guessing that means either the timings out or somethings up with the carb.

yeah exactly. i guess im on the right forum though eh! lol. i topped the damper up already yeah. gonna give it another crack tomorrow. see what else i can think of. might try changing carbs. :S see if that makes any difference. if not problems obviously elsewhere!?! if its getting fuel im thinking a spark problem somewhere. hmmmm...

As it's flooding out the carbie - stuck and/or dirty needle valve! While you're at it, replace the diaphram - there should be one in the kit.

yeah cheers gordo. had a feeling carb might be the problem. if not might check ignition again. cant see what else it could be tho. :s

it's either your carb or your distributor is not connected up right.....eg plug 1 isn't 1 on the cap when the engine thinks it is (hope that made sense).
I had to take my carb off and completely clean it with petrol (try not to get any on the rubber diaphram as they don't like sitting in it.) Was running like a dog.

i think pre 1970 were 1159? all the gaskets look similar except the exhaust manifold which looks a different shape. maybe the intake man is slightly different as well. theres one for sale on trademe with a pic. tried to get the guy down to 50 bucks incl. postage but he wasnt keen. i know rip-offco do one for 65. but the one on trademe's got O rings i think & air & water pump gaskets as well. hmmmm?!?!? :S

na all good tim. got about 5 already. lol stripped carb today (had to tap some new grooves in the screws because they were all totally worn. diaphragm had a very small tear at the edge?! not sure that would have much of an effect :S so then cleaned the whole unit. i think needle was a little stiff. put her back together & back on the car. then starter motor decided to have a hissy!!! checked the voltage & its only getting 7-8 volts. im thinking either dodgy cable or solenoid.

ANY tear in the diaphram will fornicate the carb operation as it kills the vacuum that lifts the piston/needle assembly.
