ok so i done some research on past posts and found the picture of the rally car that the parts i have came out of (the one bulldog took pictures of) so i showed my dad and said this is the car my parts came off, then he told me thats my old license plates off my old chevette!! so this is his old chevette/reshelled with his plates, he never knew what happend to the car after he sold it, then we also looked over the parts and its his old inlet manifold, tapet cover and his old adjustable cam gear that him and les hunter made. sadly not his old head tho, his old one had valves so big they were nearly touching in the middle lol ill try find some pics of his old car soon

Vented front disc kit with Wilwood four spots High ratio steering rack - in car Adjustable pedal box with hydraulic clutch Triple core radiator Miscellaneous other bits and bobs *had some work done at a local specialist - DIDN't do what I asked for and DID what I SPECIFICALLY told him not to! Kinda lost interest then but got a replacement lined up and picking it up in a couple of weeks or so. Rather than narrowing it, I'm looking at getting some alloy front hubs machined up with integral spacers so I can run some more negative on the front and retain clearance to the dampers - also the option of additional thickness so the more common front wheel drive offsets have clearance. However, that's a little down the track, if you, or your Dad, etc, may be interested, I'll be mentioning pricing when I have it. Intended for a quick road car/light car club events. Usual problems - pulling finger, time and cash being diverted elsewhere Dang it! Forgot - any history on those Chevettes? Been in a few car clubs last 25 years or so, so I may have come across them before.

sounds like it will be a very nice car, were u talking about the history of my blue, white one? if so the white one is a English assembled NZ new. i acquired it about a year or so ago from Andrew Lamont down in Geraldine near CHCH which he had restored it (think it had been sitting in a paddock for awhile by the look of the pictures he took when he got it) he also strengthened the front chassis and installed the 2.3. as for the blue one i bought it from a family down in Dunedin who's father owned it and he passed away so the family was selling it, it also only has 90,000km original k's on it

so how did you end up with the parts? Man this is a small world! I wonder what block and crank he gave you. If I remember correctly one of the cranks was undersize and couldnt be ground any further and the other was standard but good. One of the blocks was well used too and was passed good size to use any good pistons. I'm about to endeavor the same thing mate as I'm off tomorrow to hastings to look at the latest chevette on trademe and will convert it more to my liking If you're after more information on building high spec ones of these and making them reliable you should come up with myself to tony lynch's place and I can show you the many he's built and fried racing them during the journey of trial and error. Murray at weber specs built one of the most powerful ones in NZ and it's still going after 10 years odd with only bearing shells being replaces as a precautionary thing. I could go on but we'll talk more later. Gordo has a very mispent youth with these motors too and is a dictionary on them. I can tell you that Andrew Shrimpton (owner of the above rally car) now has a twin cam in it. He competes most years in the silverfern rally from memory. I can find contact details if your old man is interested? With luck I'll be posting more pics of my new chevette race car project tomorrow

the shortblock murray gave me looks all pretty stock, hopefully will be okay when i get it all tested, id love to go see tony's car and his workshop but sadly i live all the way down in nelson so not very easy for me to get upto Auckland. ill be getting murray at webbers to build me some 45 dellorto's and also overhaul my oil pump and other things he may suggest i also will be getting everything hot tanked, painted, get my head ported a little better, looking at 10.5:1 compression, might go to chevy 307 pistons still debating whether to or not to, also get everything balanced, lighten flywheel, already have a toyota 5spd in my chevette at the moment so not changing that, but only have a standard gemini diff hopefully it will hold, not really going to do anything to brakes at this stage as im not really building a race car i only want a fast street car but might need to do something with the brakes later on due to the more HP . bulldog ur new chevette looks sweet! seems funny running a holly carb tho? lol will be interesting to see what differences you do to what im doing =) it seems like u may be going to a twincam head tho?

Ah, you're familiar with the 307 rebore - IIRC, the piston crown needs machining anyway so ... You can also use cut down SB Chev' valves which gives quite a few options regarding material and stem diameter. TBH, biggest problem I expect you to have is the damn fool valve adjustment screws!

gordo haha yeah those adjust screws r crap and take ages! already done it once on my 2.3 and it wasnt very fun.. do u know much about using 307 pistons? is the reason for using them just for strength? or the ease of getting new parts? or a better seal? seems like a bit of work/ money to modify my engine to run them, is it much of a improvement? would you suggest using them? cheers

If your current pistons are fine, I don't think I'd bother stuffing around.
I suspect it was largely a financial choice - the pistons were available(!), pretty cheap, gave a good over bore and came with a set of spares ... Been a long time but, IIRC, 3 7/8" bore, slightly smaller gudgeon/wrist/piston pin so the rods* need sleeving and I think the pistons need a slight skim (or was that the block?) for the correct deck height.
*Or, if having rods made, they can be sized to suit.
BTW, I MUST have some friends or rellies with video cameras - next time I have the XE fired up I'll see if I can get it on video for you, and anyone else interested.
