Hey guys, I've got quite a bit of oil dripping down from the gearbox although I have a feeling it's a rear main seal.
I'm thinking about ripping out the gearbox soon anyway but does someone have some info on replacing this? Any other stuff I should do while I've got it out?
My clutch shudders like a bastard when taking off in 1st, you can even notice it when going down gears so I'm thinking the clutch needs replacing too. Thoughts.

Do you have a Haynes (or similar) manual? If not get one. They are good and the cover most of this type of stuff. Can be scored off trademe for $10 or so usually.
Rear main should be pretty straight forward. Just rip out the seal and take it to seal imports or similar and they'll give you a suitable replacement for a couple of dollars. That what I did on my opel box and it seems sweet. Wasn't main seal though.

Any ideas as to the clutch shudder? Could that be something else? I'm assuming to should replace the thrust bearing while I'm 'down there'

Could be a number of things, usually a worn or contaminated (gearbox oil?) clutch friction plate. Bad engine mounts or gearbox mount will also give problems. You 'may' be able to pick up a new rear gearbox seal from the local dealer or Repco - it uses an external metal sleeve that slides over the tailshaft - not the sort of thing that can easily be 'matched up'. Check the oil level - a previous owner may have overfilled it and/or it may be leaking from the rear cover of the gear lever extension. BTW, what year was yours, again? The later (post '80?) ones were much better as the gearlever tube was braced to the tailshaft housing.
