hi all
looking to re=establish the timing on my g200. at the moment it will only run when i turn the distributor round so the vacuum advance (on the dizzy) is forced around toward the block and is stopped by the fuel pump.
(sohc, carburetted ) i suspect the timing is less than 90" out but am unable to figure out the timing marks on the cam pulley , like is up or down used to point at the crank pulley? has the chain jumped a tooth or two, ( chain has great tension),
do i loosen the cam and slide it out from enough to move the chain around, or is total disassembly of the front of the block (arrrggggggH)
Any help hugely appreciated ,
ps i bought the motor this way (duh)
Thanks Al

What sort of drive does the distributor have - usually the problem is someone's put it back a tooth out - simple to pull it out and turn the shaft a tooth, if that's the problem and type of dizzy, and try again.

In that case, any reason you can't just move the leads around one division, and reset the timing for that?
Regarding the cam' timing, it should be symetric timing (or very close to, so it the engine is at true TDC, the inlet and exhaust valve on either #1 or #4 should be open an equal amount.
[edit] i found the old Chilton manual and it would suggest the oil pump wasn't timed when it was installed, at some stage, and that would put the dizzy out - assuming I have the right engine identified, of course* - the book covers a number of engines, including a V6.
*haven't touched one, AFAIK, since the G180's in the Gov'mint Rodeos in the early eighties.
