i just picked up a chevette parts car and it has just been dragged out of sitting behind a shed for 2 years, i cleaned the points and it fired up quite easily , bit the carb had a leak out out the bottom rubber o'ring seal so i put new o'rings in and now its way out of tune it wont start unless i put the foot flat and get someone to hold the slide up? anyone exparienced this before? thanks.

How far did you strip it down?
It may be one of three things - if the diaphram (under the cover) has a hole or tear, if won't lift the piston/needle to allow enough fuel out. If the float has been incorrectly set and/or the needle valve has been leaking, it'll be running very rich and may need a fair bit of throttle. The last thing is the mixture adjustment - this is done screwing the brass 'nut' assembly under the carb' in or out, this raises the jet hole in relation to the needle - in weaker/out richer - and this may be the problem, the initial setting it screwed (gently) right in and then out two full turns.
If everything else is OK, that should allow you to get it started and when it's warm you can make the final adjustment.
IIRC, the carb' stripping, re-assembly and adjustment is in the workshop manual you should have.

thanks for that im thinking its the daiaphram because if i put damper oil in the pot it will hardly run at all and sometimes i have to hold the slide up for it to start as i have been up and down on the screw adjustment many times, but engine is running verry rich ,and at idol/or held at certon rpm it will shake alot and smell of running extremely rich

Sounds more like flooding - i'd address that first - did you replace the float's needle valve, and check the float setting?
It'd be worth picking up a carb' kit and giving it a thorough going over - do you have the manual?

yes got carb kit coming and unfortunatly i dont know the needle seat settings  but have an owners manuall on the way, went to start and move it doday and surprise surprise fired 3 times but wouldent start  |
