found this on the net its quiet interesting thought i'd share it maybe you already know but hey no harm done! www.hoppers.com.au/geminibrakes.htm it says you can you VL commy diffs as upgrades for the gemini just need to have the axle shortened and resplined! i think the rb30 vl commys even had disc rear! ;D wonder how strong those diffs are...

Remember that anything you put in is going to need to be mounted differently as they don't run the torque-tube (look under your car, there is a fat chuck of metal comin' off the front of the diff that mounts to the under carrige). If you're going to that effort, you may aswell grab something proper like a hilux or a ford 9", unless you can pick up something LSD for very cheap.
Some people like to use the Piazza LSDs, IF... you can find one. They are uber-rare and only came out on the Piazza Turbos. They bolt in, but have a slightly wider track, prolly nothing to worry about tho.

I'm pretty sure VL's did come with lsds but they are obviously rare as anything. Aussie people tend to make the most of anything commodore seen as they have about 50 million of them over there but zeps right, over here there are other options which may prove cheaper and better in the long run such as hilux rear end etc. I've been told the manual twincam piazzas came out with lsd's but I've seen one and it didn't look very lsd to me. They are 50mm wider overall which may mean you can't squeze those 17's up under the quard like you can with something custom (or factory for that matter)

Commo diff will be fine for most applications- i dont think you'll brake one in any hurry unless you're making some serious power! But chances of finding a lsd diff in good condition and cheap are slim to none. The piazza diff needs to be shortened and is not really worth it as the diff isnt too strong. (theres one on trademe at the mo) You can also do a commo disk brake conversion pretty cheaply and easly on the stock diff too.

The borgwarner diff found in VK,VL up to today is also used in Falcons and Fairmonts with live axle rear. Lsd's for them are quite common I got mine from a XF Fairmont and I did'nt look that hard for it. It fits in my VN housing and has the same spline pattern. Also the internals out of the IRS borgwarner center are interchangeable with the live axle version and you see a lot of those in lsd for sale.

funny u should say the Vl commy lsd are hard to come by coz a mate at work sed hes got a rb30 commy sitting in the paddock and its lsd so he says and his old man wants it gone! so might get a freebie ;D is shortened and resplining an axel expensive ?

ouch thats not cheap! also been asking round and doesnt look like VL commys came out with lsd only the turbo model so crap! guess gotta build me own ! I dont agree with the idea that only the VL Turbos had LSD's I know a guy used to have a GTS VL It was just the RB30E engine non turbo with a factory 5spd and maybe factory LSD. Now it used to be his parents car they got it new not sure if they put the LSd in after buying it or if it was standard. I'm sure the V8's came out LSD also. Also why does it matter if VL's did'nt come out LSD all the other VL onwards model's LSD centers will fit a VL housing anyway. Its only the width of the housings that is differant and apparently there is two differant LSD's one is tougher than the other. Here is a link to a page with alot of holden diff info. www.ozgemini.com/viewtopic.php?t=1891&start=0And this one very informitive this one. forum.streetcommodores.com.au/showthread.php?t=19641&highlight=salisbury
