Been a while since last visit. Tony at Lynchbuilt was very busy on my car again few months ago doing 4-link back end, installing Hilux diff with slippy, brake upgrade all round, lower stiffer springs, Bilstein shockies. Also completed DTV type signage too. Cant believe it is the same car - handling is incredibly improved, sharp turn in, predictable sliding on limit. Had heap of fun down at Taupo Dual sprint meeting - only slightly spoiled by gearbox issue ( fixed back in pits) and finally car expired with fuel pump failure. Had a ball though. Also had huge fun at the Hampton Hillclimb event in the rain. Big lesson learned - get your car handling and stopping before chasing massive power increases ! Now, about those camshafts......... Photos attached - was a big project and not for the faint hearted - but Tony had already done 3 others, so really got it sorted And here is what makes it all go: Chevette now in DTV livery:

Very nice.
Looks like a Gen 3 3S-GE in there. Should get along quite nicely, and theres the option of going to a Gen 4 3S-GE "BEAMS" that makes 210bhp straight out of the box.

Hi Gordo and Misdablack, Yes Gordo it is of course a Toyota 3SGE with a few mild mods - the attachment tag is a bit of a give away I guess ! The DTV colours do look great - car always looked a bit plain before.
Thanks for advice on photos Misdablack, will give it a try - the system just refuses to load them altogether from my computer no matter what i did. Only accepted one at a time.
I am a bit grounded at moment hobbling around on crutches after a recent accident, going stir crazy not being able to drive the Chevette or enter any events probably for couple more months. V frustrating.

Hi Mikuni, yes you are right. Been faithful and reliable motor so far, so long as keep oil fresh. Have also fitted an oil cooler and oil thermostat at same time as suspension upgrade etc. Oil pressure and temp amazingly stable now when going hard out. Had a bit of an overheating problem for a long time - finally resolved by removing thermostat from original position down by water pump and reinstalling inline in top radiator hose - another successful Tony idea ! Thermostat now reacts to temp of water fresh out of engine, rather than fresh out of radiator ( cool ) thus wasnt opening suficiently, which seemingly is fine in a road car pottling along. Water temp now rock stable. BEAMS ? V tempting as we have discussed before. Still have my C20XE Red Top under the bench though. Car is now capable of handling a lot more power - is now same spec in brakes and suspension as Tony's car. His Lexus V8 transplant is almost complete now - looks fantastic !

Hi there, you must be Reg?
Tonys told me alot about you and your chevette (ive been working on a g32b up at his over the last few months).
Heard about your accident, injurying your leg(achilles was it?) such a shame as you wont be able to drive for a while ay.
Anyways your chevette is looking choice how it is. Pretty interesting seeing the 3sge in it as most of em just have the g161/200 and opel 2.2 swaps. Keen to see how it runs.

Hi Tai, yep, thats me. Yes very madning being a bit immobilised - can drive autos but cant use my left foot for clutch for a while yet. Car has been continuous work in progress for about 13 years now....first engine transplant was a Toyota 18RG on 40 Webers, with W55 box / piazza rear axle / Piazza turbo front brakes / cheapie adjustable shockies. Good reliable old motor, took constant beating without complaint, but limited potential. Handling was very wayward on the limit, have swapped ends at Pukekohe going thru the sweeper at end of main straight many times ! Decided on 3SGE Gen2 replacement because of large amount expertise available on these motors, put on 45 Dellortos / Fraser modded cam wheels ( more overlap )/ mildly ported head / zero decked for sl compression increase / w57 box ( better ratios ) / headers, link ignition computer/ 3SGTE oil pump / balanced.. Have run this motor couple years now, never been dyno'd - prob putting out maybe 170bhp on guesswork settings. Should dyno it soon to see if more power still lurking. If it goes bang, will have to decide whether to use my C20XE Red Top or maybe a very tempting Altezza dual vvti, which should mate directly to W57 bellhousing / box...? Shame not to have the DCOEs if i went that way though - still, Dans Honda motor sounds fantastic at full noise......be hard to match his power though. V pleased with way it goes and looks now, been a long journey. Tony's recent work as above was a major leap forward and very worthwhile result. Tony fired up his V8 when I was there couple days ago - looks fantastic and sounds ferocious ! Bring it on !

Hi Jesse, hope you find the Piazza bits useful - they seem to have found a good home with you. Always a shame to just dump stuff like that, getting hard to find now. Yes, Tony's car is going to be a beast out on the track, will scare the hell out of a few people ! He will probably tell people that it is just a 1256 on twin Strombergs....... Still looking for some old photos of original build on my car, but was a while ago and many are on old film camera before I went digital. Just check the taper on the front balljoint shafts which mount into the holes in the hub carriers, think there might have been some variation - talk to Tony if they dont seem to be a snug fit . I used the Piazza top arms which are identical to the Chevette ones, so ball joints matched up ok. The bottom Piazza arms are different and cant be used as I recall and we had some issues, think might have to change bottom ball joints on the Chevette lower arms to Piazza ones in some cases.
