hi all got the internet back now. yay for mee. i need to shorten the struts in my car, to keep my rear springs captve and the wheels from rubbing on the fronts, thanks to the offset of wheels being wong. has anyone done this before? i went to the suspension shop down here and they told me fiat ones but they bloody expensive and he reckons i have to modify them. is it just a matter of re threading the top bolt in its simplist form?? i know other people have used this and that in there car nut that is for there height. i have an engineer lined up but he not 100 percent sure wether he is able to do it. PLEASE HELP ME its all i have to do to legally cruise the mean streets of invercargill.

You don't need to modify a thing if you buy the right shocks. All I do is jack the car up and take the wheel off. Then you jack the diff up seperately until the srping becomes just captive. Don't jack it too much, just enough to keep it in there. Now mark the shock by putting a line around the bottom of the top part, so you can see how much it has compressed.
Now all you need to do, is take the shock out and take it in to your local suspension shop and getting something suitable. I use Autolign here in Hamilton and they are great. They have a catalogue that shows what each shock has at the top and the bottom so you can ensure you get the right shock. Theres no point going to supercheap or repco (I think) because they don't (or didn't used to) have all the information in their catalogues.
Theres also no point one of us saying "get this shock" because everyones cars are different heights with different springs. I have used several different shocks in the rear of my wagon over the years, usually ute ones because they have a higher rating for extra weight. I'm currently using Holden VG ute ones apparently - no modifcations. I even believe you can use Chevette front ones in the rear, however you just need to make sure they are the right length.

thanks i have them marked. did it yesterday. for the guy to look at shortening them. its by far the hardest bloody thing i have had to deal with on the car. all part of the game i suppose. tell ya something for nothing though this forum is a god send, i really appreciate all the help and hope one day i can return the favour. starting my interior soon, all redone in black with a carbon fibre dash and centre console, gonna bring the inside up to a decent standard to represent the gem fraternity. then the boot and i might try seeing if worthy of a show

gem fronts in the rear. slightly "stiff-er" lol ?? The increase in spring rate in the rear from lowering it does require an increase in shock dampening and rebound.

If the average is supposed to be 6", you're not coming up too short...

does moosh realise he doesn't have to get his shocks shortened, he just has to get shocks from another car that are the right length, i believe my wagon has a mixture of liteace and l300 shocks at present

i looking for the cheapest option really for the shocks, i did fairings for an engineers speedway bike so returning the favour by shortening my shocks, free is the cheapest in my book lol. speaking of averages somewoman tried to tell me the other day 6 minutes is the average for sex these days, lol. you got to be joking right? 6 minutes for me includes getting undressed from wearing 20 hole doc martins foreplay, cuddles and a cigirette, and on an "average" day i am asleep before the end of my smoke lol, and on the subject of average google image search "man dingo" he would make john holmes look average. lol
