not strange at all mate, very common set up pre efi turbo, commonly called suck through or draw through, its definitely old tech difficult to tune and not as safe as efi, ie air fuel mix drawn from carb then compressed leaving a compressed volatile mixture between your turbo and inlet valves meaning any backfire or misfire could ignite this potentially quite explosive mix.
similar things can happen with v8s running blowers thats why they run little brass plates that will let go releasing the energy from an explosion without blowing the inlet manifold to bits

As McQ said, common before EFI was commonplace.
Carbs were used with Turbo's in two ways, like that - draw or suck through and blow through - where the turbo blows through the carbie.
The advantage of the first setup is that an un-modified carb can be used and it's relatively easy to set up. The second also has advatages in that the original carb location, linkages, etc, can be used but the carb has to be modified for a pressurised float chamber as otherwise the pressurised incoming air will just blow the fuel straight back through the jets. There is also no compensation for the different air densities due to pressure and temperature.

I ran a completly un modified 32/36 weber in blow thru was mint as only issue I had was getting the top cover to seal it leaked abit of fuel not like dripping fuel but enough to bug me. The float breathers go up into the air filter in stock form so nothing needed to be done to pressurise the float bowl.

hmm i wouldof thought that youd have to get a special carb that could mount on that angle. So whats the chance or slapin a turb on a standard on a standard exhaust manifold?lol

So whats the chance or slapin a turb on a standard on a standard exhaust manifold?lol The carbs not on an angle. It looks like a standard side draft, webber, delorto, solex, mikuni etc No offence, but don't go there aye. Its not the easiest thing to setup. Unless you just want something to potter around and learn about engine with, then you could give it a crack and just see what happens. Theres so much information out there on carb turbo engines. Just have a bit of a search on it and all will become clear, then perhaps we can help on the chevette/gemini specific stuff that you need answered.
