Yo im pretty new to this forum (1st post) but ive been following it for awhile (tis lookin good work so far).
well im picking up a lil 2 door chevette within the next few weeks for a few hundy and im looking into dropping a 12a into it (long term project). im a bit of a rotar fanatic and havent seen any rotavettes apart from that guy in englands so it would be pretty sweet to own one. would much appreciate it if anyone can point in the right direction, tell how i should approach this and/or whether it would be worth it. which parts would be necessary to pull it off etc.
cheers guys

Hiya, mate, welcome. You may get a bit of hassle about moding a 2 door like that - or is it a hatch? Been a few done over the years, also 13Bs, and they've a decent size engine bay so should be OK. Chappy in england is actually a Kiwi who's heading back to Blenheim with his wife so may be able to help. He did a fairly good write up on the www.chevettes.com/forum/ site, if you want to have a quick look there?

Its been done heaps aye so id says its pretty straight forward. Should be very much the same as a gemini rotary conversion...cept less room for radiator and the gbox tunnel is smaller...
If you want to do 12a just buy a 12a + gbox + dshaft + all other bits to make it work and then go about building yourself engine and gearbox cross members. I would say you would probably have to make the gearbox tunnel abit bigger unless you mounted the engine real far forward? dunno im not sure how big an sa22 box is.. you may want to change the diff to a gemini unit or something. They are abit bigger. Altho mikuniZZ still running the little standard diff with that opel twin cam.

Cheers guys all the help is much appreciated. Its an aqua 2 door hatch, pretty ave condition, i dont think theres any bad rust or anything that i need to worry about so should b sweet. Yea ive already read up on that forum, pretty choice chevette ay. really wana aim at something similar but more eyecatching (no offense or anything haha). Sweet as thanks heaps for the info, do u guys reckon i should go for a 12a or 13b? i was thinking just a very standard mild port 12a for the mean time until i can afford bridging it. Going to be working hard until the end of feb so i can start funding the project, should be able to earn about 3g to kick me off but then funds will be rising soo slowly cos of uni . cosmetic wise i was thinking about going for a dark red/crimsony sort of color with a pearl (not too sure yet) and a black interior. Want to have it sorted for summer next year so i can take it down to gizzy for new years.

is it oli98s hatch? he had an aqua hatch... my green hatch had a tanga innit before i owned it i got it as a shell supposedly has an LSD in it too... He rated it way better than any oldschool mazda co323 etc) for handling etc. My trans tunnel is enlarged and I have the front x member still, has vette mounts shaved off... also have extractors from him and the unfitted series 5 RX7 4pots and the piazza discs for the rear... eventually I wanna run probably a 13b bridgey in it but short term wanna put in a mildly worked G200 with twin weber 40mm IDFs as I lready have all the bits... will be cool when theres a few rota vettes around... look forward to your progress... I'm in Albany if you wanna eyeball the ex rota shell... also have an engine x member, no idea how it works, if you a rota phreak may make sense to you... not selling any of this stuff as planning on much much later use butt may be useful to have a look?! may not...

Nah its not ay, buying it off my bros mate.
To be honest id rather go for a 323 hatchy project but i lack the funds and the chevettes available at a very cheap price so its more suitable to my circumstances, not saying that chevettes are sh*t or anything lol theyre still pretty choice.
Oh really? yea i'd be pretty keen on checking it out one day (probably not til later this month or during feb though). That sounds mint ay, everythings pretty much good to go in your case then (minus engine n box) lucky bugger, pretty jealous really haha. most likely going to be a veeeery slow build as im still learning and dont have a solid income, i havent done an engine drop b4 but it should be good experience plus doing a certficate of applied tech at unitec (then probably a bachelors) which will be very helpful.

maybe just buy an import series 4/5 13b turbo. I think you Can get a running engine + box for about $2500.
if you go 12a let me know if you want some new(brand new) housings

yeah... been tempted by getting a nosecut off trademe... whole set up like 77vette says 2500ish... I don't wanna go turbo tho at this stage at least... ends up adding heaps of extra expense to the build after getting intercooler/piping, computer and all the rest of the blah... My brother had a 12a stge 2 turbo in his series 1, went dam hard till he out raved it... carb turbs from memory... spose could get the front cut sell off ll the turbs gear and inlet, loom and stock puter and get a nice 45mm IDA to mash onto that motherfacker... maybe should just roll that way, be a couple of grand to rebuild G200 anyway... heheheheh

wanna go turbo tho at this stage at least... ends up adding heaps of extra expense to the build after getting intercooler/piping, computer and all the rest of the blah... you realise that a hlaf cut comes with computer and intercooler etc/everything you need to put into chevette. Just find a driveshaft yoke No point adding after market bits to say a series 5 turbo as it makes about all the power you'd ever want in a chevette in factory spec. an unopened import engine would prob last quite a while as long as you dont wind the boost up etc haha edit: steve put one into his rx7. Had a good run out of it but was burning oil. Bought some new water seals and oil rings + seals and now is back up and running on the original apex seals etc. 13b turbos are quite cheap to own. Parts are real easy to get. things get very expensive once you start looking for extra horsepower tho ;D

yea cheers coggers but like ive already said, ive already read up on that thread quite a few times actually haha but thanks.
yea not too keen on turbo, although selling off the rest and doing an ida set up would be pretty sweet but yea was kinda looking for a cheap alternative :L eg what i had in mind was looking for a decent conditioned 12a + box for around 1-2g then rebuild it if neccessary. then eventually porting the plates and adding an ida set up.
although a 13b turb would b pretty sick haha

well that really makes sense man ?? lol Most of the time it does - when you're trying to do things on the cheap there's usually a whole lot more money and work required to re-work, modify and plain repair parts. Spending a bit more initially for something that just does the job can save all that additional hassle. For example, I've three different (triple) master cylinder reservoir setups for the project and I'm not happy with any of them - it would have been cheaper to get the expensive option in the first place!

Ahhhh i get it now, didnt quite click first time over. yea thats a good point really, i wana get the job done to a good standard and dont want to have to re work areas on the car which were poorly modified and what not.
ohh and out of curiosity is it much of a hassle to do the gemini front end conversion? i quite like the look but if its too much of a deal to pull it off and is in the thousands of dollars i'll probably keep away from it
