What I'd build given a choice again would be a saab 2.3 turbo, Im sure I remember reading its from the same family of motor as the xe's, meaning gearbox bolting up..

So I've decided that if my race car doesn't sell this week I'm going to hang onto and re-power it with something silly. Thinking Lexus v8 (although EFI unlike Tony's) or something turbo Volvo turbo!

What I'd build given a choice again would be a saab 2.3 turbo, Im sure I remember reading its from the same family of motor as the xe's, meaning gearbox bolting up.. I think it was me who made that suggestion, but it was just an idea I had as the motors sit in a GM (general motors) chassis and drive a GM gearbox. As I've since found out, they are not based around a GM motor in any way and share no common components, nor block or mounts. They use an adaptor plate to bolt up to the GM gearbox, so theoretically they should be able to bolt up to a Getrag box from a 4 cyl VN Commodore, like I have in my Chevette. The mounts and sump etc may not be such a simple solution, but then this isn't a huge hurdle. The other issue that I've found is that the factory ECU wants a wheel speed sensor for what ever reason. People usually just use an ABS sensor from their car, but obviously in out cars we'd need to retrofit something, or give it a false pulse from an electronic device. But yeah, a very exciting conversion idea. An easy 300bhp from a bomb proof engine is not something to be sneezed at, especially when people don't really want them and they can be had for a matter of $100's.

The engine will drop straight in*, with suitable engfine mounts, but the heater outlet is different - the Chevette has it on the hose and the HC on the water pump - easy fix with the right hose to suit the pump. HC exhaust will bolt on - not sure about using the Chevette one on the HC, though, Early HC used a downdraft Stromberg and the later the CD Stromberg - same as a Chevette - so there may be throttle linkage issues.
Problem will be the gearbox - the Chevette uses a shorter (or longer???) tailshaft and housing. If you can get hold of the correct tailshaft and housing, the rest of the Chevette 'box can be used to build it up.
Wheels should be 4" PCD, NOT the same as the later HC and Chevette.

In early models like t-cars, mantas, etc? I know they use the Saab motors in Astras/Vectras etc and it is a straight forward conversion, it's just trying to translate back into whether it will go easily into a Chevette/Gemini that is the difficult part.
