Hello all- I got told about this site by Gordo on chevettes.com Thought I'd join even though im over here in the land of the long grey cloud. I'm kiwi through and through and when last living in NZ I had built a HS replica (well as far as having the big heavy boat anchor engine goes...) So heres a link to my latest project which some or you will have seen anyway. I Built this car because no one in britain has built a rotary powered chevette and also here in britain rotarys are actually bloody cheap to buy! so here goes.... www.chevettes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11982

Nice to see you made it - BTW, did I mention one of the rally Chevette in the Northland Car Club a few years back was 13B powered - went well but sounded aweful Not like a proper four banger, hehe.

Cheers Guys!,
yeah- its a problem with rotarys...when i'm pootling along in it it sounds like a total boy racer rice burner exhaust. not very exciting. rev it- sounds better.its loud but still in a not very powerful sounding way. shame Still- its a first for here in blighty! And not many will guess whats under the hood!
Just finished big job today- after the first few drives(did about 35 miles in total) with leaky oil cooler and noisy water pump I've chopped the middle of the front valance out and fit a later series 4 rx7 oil cooler(WITHOUT CRACKS). I've moved it down so now it has loads of air flow and not passing hot air onto radiator. I fit a new water pump- managed to get a brand new one from local auto factor. It was moisy and loud clicking which had me worried! turns out i'd forgoten to fit the 4 little bolts onto bottom pully! nuts - lucky.
I've also today fitted another Gbox i got from another kiwi ritor bloke here. About lunchtime today I was fittinmg it with two scissor jacks to lift it and it all came crashing down- one jack slicing my forehead open. bugger.
Its all sorted and I drove it into Oxford city centre watching the gauges carefully. It runs loads cooler- I've got to reset the electric fan cutin point.
So i'm well happy now- its still far too high geared though!....maybe some 13" slot mags with 50 series tyres?
now gotta have a shower and get all the blood off my face!

Oh mean a rota! um for different gear ratios you could try a gearset out of an mx5 box. Its what the pro 7 racers use over here. Or maybe put the rx7 diff in and add a mazda speed lsd...$$$ Ive been wondering how my series5 turbo box will go on my 13b, which will be pp and na so prob will be Barry Whiteed up with turbo gears.
You need massive ports for tough sound! might be hard/expensive for you in the uk to get this done tho...you can buy porting templates off racing beat for like $15 US dollars. Get the die grinder out! Ive seen some engines pulled down with hori azz homemade ports ;D fully wonky and rough haha and srcape marks on the surface of the endplates where the diegrinder slipped! Homemade ports always sound tough tho...unless you use a power drill ;D haha 'phat pulse boe!' but same as standard power...
edit: i dare you to be the first person the the UK to roll a drill port ;D ill export you some modgies aswell so that you can be tough. haha drill ports are so funny

hello 77, I've been outta NZ too long!!! what does barry whiteed mean? Drill ports- never heard of them...sounds funny though. just picturing some poor chap with his black and decker out! There are some good experts out here- not many considering 60,000,000 people but enough to go around the small band of rotary nutters here....of whom most are from downunder anyway. loads of info out there- I'm after another engine to play with over winter. Get this...a mint as solid series 3 in my local scrapyard- and i mean solid!..only some little patches of surface rust...is selling for£250($750NZD)!!!! lots of cheap cars here but not many old jappas as they all rust away! alex

Cool, I've been following this project on the chevette forum and I remember when you sold the HS replica. It was the one that was primer with paint coming through from where inside the doors had been painted aye?
This forum is funny so all the 'slang' you see isn't us been kiwi's, its just that it changes words. sh*t = nuts fu*ked = Barry Whiteed etc etc.. try it, you'll see! Theres some funny ones..
Drill ports are just a piss take really. People have been known to actually get out the drill and do that, rather than shape the ports in a conventional manner.
I myself am waiting for all the nice tidy renesis conversions to come through and hopefully start giving NA rotary conversions a good name again.
edit: Fuk I was just thinking how awesome it would be to drive around in a stupidly fast, crazily ported rotary chevette in the UK. No one would really know what the hell it was! Awesome!

I myself am waiting for all the nice tidy renesis conversions to come through and hopefully start giving NA rotary conversions a good name again. nah drill ports aint no piss take! they are everywhere. Alot of engines built by RES and the like are drill ports. Remember most gangster rotangs are just for cruising and pulling rota hoes...so a standard 12a drill port which costs Barry White all to make but still sounds nice is a good option for them. After all they are only after the tough sound and a standard na rotary isnt exactly underpowered. Ive recently seen with my own eyes a standard 13bT put into an rx3 with the only mod being and RES drill port he just drills a line of small holes along above where the corner seals run so that you get the same noise from the overlap that you get from bridge ports and J ports etc. They do sound abit tinny tho! Im keen for renesis converions as well! they are a nice engine to drive but i think the standard batty is more fun than the rx8. Renesis would probably be awes in a lighter car tho. Rx8 feels too heavy for it. Ive seen that you can get the 4 port engines out of the automatic cars for like $3500. The are nuts in the rx8 but i think would be better for bridgeporting than a 6 port engine out of the manual cars. Cant wait to hear the first bridgeport renesis!!! edit: and how i wish i could find a series 3 for $750!!! or any Sa22 for that matter. Prices are Barry Whiteing crazy now. Piece of nuts series 1's go for over 5 grand and average ones are heading towards 10!!!

I remember years ago seeing in a magazine, a workshop in japan with about 50 renesis engines sitting there ready to be used in conversions. I remember there was a reason they got so many in, I just can't remember that reason! Would be so awesome in a light car, as you say. The RX8's are quite hefty for what they are but still make good power. I heard one with a nice exhaust yesterday. They sound soooo smooth.
I'm fully surprised about the drill port thing. Its not like its hard or expensive to smooth that nuts down nicely with a dremel/die grinder, why don't they just do that? I seriously thought it was just one of those rumours that some c*nt starts because his mate had an awesome one that they drilled out 2 inch holes in and it makes "farken mean as power bro" like a millions horsepowers torques

Hmmm- renesis... Test drove the 230bhp rx8. very nice but a bit too modern
Had it for one hour and when I returned the salesman had spotted my old scooby pickup(another ace car!!!!) parked around the corner- I think he had then worked out I wasnt buying!!!
A fella over here has a stripped down renesis 4 port motor for sale £500
But for now my little 12A is fast(and thirsty) enough....

just logged in again as not far from leaving here to come back home. So i couldn't remember what i'd posted on and it was my old chevette. Well the latest on this car is that i sold it to a bloke in ireland and he crashed it 5 days later.:(totaled it into a tree. But he has reshelled it. I miss that car so i think once back in nz its another chevette for us. I have a funky elford turbo 12a i'm bringing back- only 160bhp but alot more torque. Rare as and wicked old suck through a su carb turbo setup. Got to do some sill work on our 4door chevette here first though..

Hey, man, going to be going back to the old home town (Blenheim or Nelson, wasn't it?) or some other place? You've got the best exchange rate fot a long time to look forward to - not that that means a lot.
Didn't the Irish chappie repair or reshell the 'Vette?
